I have watched horses interact for many years.  There is a very definite

 "pecking order" that is constantly being tested and challenged.

It can be very violent on occasion, but far more frequently, the "Alpha Horse"

position is upheld simply by a look.  Young horses tend to strive more aggressively –

they’ll become more subtle with time.
